Plan Name: Standard Ground-Level Gable Roof Playhouse

Footprint: 72" wide x 72" deep

Wall Height: 60" from finished floor to top plate

Overall Peak Height: Approximately 84" from finished floor

Intended Use: Backyard children’s playhouse

Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate DIY / light contractor

1. General Specifications

ComponentExact Measurement
Overall width 72"
Overall depth 72"
Wall framing height 60"
Front door rough opening 24" wide x 48" high
Side window rough openings 18" wide x 18" high each

2. Foundation and Base Layout

This contractor version uses a simple elevated wood platform on deck blocks or concrete pavers. This helps protect the floor framing from ground moisture and is strongly recommended for wet climates.

Base Support Layout

  • Use 6 support points minimum: 4 corners and 2 centered supports.
  • Recommended support spacing:
    • Front row: left corner, center, right corner
    • Back row: left corner, center, right corner
  • Use compacted gravel under each block or paver.
  • Keep bottom of wood framing at least 1" to 2" above grade if possible.

5. Roof Framing Layout

This plan uses a simple gable roof. The ridge runs front to back. Roof overhang is approximately 4". Adjust as needed for appearance and weather protection.

Roof Framing Assumptions

  • Span across building body: 72"
  • Recommended overhang each side: 4"
  • Total roof width including overhang: 80"
  • Approximate rafter run per side: 40"
  • Recommended rise to achieve roughly 84" overall peak: about 24" from top plate area depending on exact assembly
PieceQtyApprox. LengthMaterial
Rafters 4 to 6 Approx. 49" to 52" each after angle cuts 2x4
Ridge board 1 72" 2x4
Roof sheathing panels 2 Cut to fit 1/2" exterior plywood

Contractor note: Because playhouse roof styles vary, cut one test rafter first. Confirm seat cut, ridge connection, and overhang before batch-cutting remaining rafters.

Basic Rafter Template Notes

  • Use one full-size layout board for the template.
  • Mark plumb cut at ridge.
  • Mark birdsmouth seat cut where rafter meets top plate.
  • Mark tail cut to create 4" overhang.
  • Dry-fit before installing remaining rafters.

6. Sheathing, Siding, and Trim

Wall Sheathing

  • Use 1/2" exterior plywood or exterior-rated panel siding.
  • Fasten every 8" on edges and 12" in field.
  • Cut out door and window openings after wall sheathing is installed for best alignment.

Roof Sheathing

  • Use 1/2" exterior plywood.
  • Leave small expansion gap between sheets.
  • Install roofing felt or synthetic underlayment before shingles or panels.

Trim

  • Use 1x4 trim around windows, door, and corners.
  • Seal end grain and all exposed cut edges before final paint.

7. Contractor-Grade Cut List

MaterialCut Pieces
2x6 Pressure-Treated (2) @ 72", (6) @ 69"
2x4 Framing Lumber Wall studs, jack studs, cripples, headers, ridge, rafters as listed above
3/4" Exterior Plywood (1) floor cut to 72" x 72" or assembled from two trimmed sections
1/2" Exterior Plywood Wall and roof sheathing cut to fit
1x4 Trim Cut to fit doors, windows, corners, roof fascia

8. Full Materials List

  • (8 to 10) 2x4x8 framing studs
  • (8) 2x6x8 pressure-treated boards for floor framing and extras
  • (3 to 4) sheets 1/2" exterior plywood or siding panels
  • (2) sheets 3/4" exterior plywood for floor if assembling in sections
  • (4 to 6) 1x4x8 trim boards
  • Exterior screws, 3"
  • Exterior screws, 1-5/8"
  • Construction adhesive, optional
  • Roofing underlayment
  • Shingles or corrugated roofing panels
  • Door hinges
  • Latch hardware
  • Exterior caulk
  • Exterior primer and paint
  • Concrete pavers or deck blocks
  • Gravel for base support pads

9. Assembly Sequence

  1. Layout building footprint and verify square using diagonal measurements.
  2. Install gravel pads and support blocks or pavers.
  3. Assemble floor frame and verify square.
  4. Install floor sheathing.
  5. Frame front, back, and two side walls flat on platform.
  6. Raise rear wall first, then side walls, then front wall.
  7. Plumb walls and fasten corners together.
  8. Install temporary bracing before roof framing.
  9. Set ridge board and install test rafters.
  10. Install remaining rafters.
  11. Apply roof sheathing and roofing underlayment.
  12. Install finished roofing.
  13. Apply wall sheathing or siding.
  14. Cut out openings cleanly.
  15. Install door, trim, and window framing details.
  16. Seal, caulk, prime, and paint.

10. Squaring and Framing Checks

  • Check floor frame diagonals before decking.
  • Check wall frame diagonals before standing each wall.
  • Use a 4' level to verify plumb at all corners.
  • Measure door opening both top and bottom before sheathing.
  • Dry-fit roof framing before final fasteners.

11. Weatherproofing Upgrades

These upgrades are highly recommended in rainy climates.

  • Use pressure-treated lumber for entire floor frame.
  • Prime all sides of cut plywood edges before install.
  • Increase roof overhang to 6" if desired.
  • Install drip edge on roof.
  • Caulk trim joints before final painting.
  • Keep finished grade sloped away from building.
  • Raise structure off soil contact.

12. Door Build Detail

Simple contractor-style slab door can be made from 1/2" or 3/4" plywood reinforced with rear cleats.

Door PartMeasurement
Door slab 23-1/4" x 47-1/4"
Clearance allowance About 3/8" to 1/2" total around rough opening after trim plan is considered
Hinges 2 heavy-duty exterior hinges

13. Safety and Use Notes

Important: This plan is intended for a small children’s playhouse, not a habitable structure. Always verify local rules, yard setback requirements, and safety expectations before building.

  • Sand all edges and corners thoroughly.
  • Use only exterior-rated, child-safe paint after curing.
  • Do not use glass in windows; use open frames or acrylic if desired.
  • Inspect fasteners, door swing, and roof annually.
  • Anchor structure if site is exposed to wind.

15. Final Build Summary

This contractor version gives you a stronger, more buildable layout than the earlier draft. The structure is still simple enough for a careful DIY build, but the framing notes, support layout, and weatherproofing details make it far more practical for real construction. It is designed to help you build cleaner, square up the frame more easily, and avoid common mistakes around the floor platform, openings, and roof fit.
